Greetings fellow crafters,
Winter has arrived in Johannesburg! Although the days are sunny and there is not a cloud in the sky, the wonderful warmth of summer has gone. It is the perfect time for picking up some knitting or crocheting.
What have my students been doing, you may ask? Kirsten van der Riet has embroidered the front of a cushion cover and is currently busy on the second one. The pincushions are embroidered beautifully. I can’t wait to see the pair of cushions completed. The design and colours are stunning.
I shared with you Judy Benjamin’s completed her Stitchdoodles design of African birds, animals and plants in the last blog. Well, Judy got the embroidery framed and it looks tremendous. She has also begun the embroidery on a second matching design, so watch this space!
Eleanor Peake knitted a gorgeous beanie for her niece. To finish it off, she crocheted a little flower. It worked out so well. What a very special gift for this little girl. It also allowed Eleanor to upskill on her crocheting!
Zimasa Phaswana started crochet lessons recently. She is learning the stitches like a true champion, and I share with you her first ever granny square as well as her swatch of waffle stitch.
So, what am I working on? I was lucky enough to get some merino wool from the South African Agricultural show called Nampo. With it I am knitting a Stylecraft pattern for three quarter sleeve jersey called Jeanie. It is going so quickly- I only have part of the cabled yolk left to knit. I simply cannot wait to wear it!
I have also crocheted a scarf and beanie for Mandela Day. I have started early, so that hopefully I can contribute quite a few to this cause. I have encouraged my students to follow suit with the beanies and scarves, or to make Knitted Knockers for the Cancer Association.
I give lessons in knitting, crocheting and hand embroidery at Kyalami are on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. Lessons run every alternate week, except for the Thursday mornings; they are every week. I’d love you to join me so I can share my passion for crafts with you.
