Greetings fellow crafters,
Wow! I can’t believe how quickly the year is going! I have just returned from a wonderful weekend in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands- one of my favourite parts our our country. The weather was perfect and we had a special time with my parents and my daughter.
I have so much to share with you regarding my students’ work.
Elfie de Necker completed her embroidery called Greensleaves designed by Brenda Sortwell. Elfie is a perfectionist and her embroidery is absolutely a testament to this. It is exquisite. I think Elfie is getting it made into a tray.
Eleanor Peake has embroidered a Roseworks design called Sung Dynasty. It is going to be used on a footstool for a friend. Eleanor, like Elfie, sews beautifully. What a special gift; indeed, an heirloom.
Lynne Ross asked me to teach her how to crochet a granny square. Next thing I knew, Lynne produced a stunning knee blanket. She has crocheted it in the most gorgeous colours. It is quite magnificent.
Lynne and another student, Hazel Mackenzie, are learning to do mosaic crochet as they are both planning to tackle the Casablanca pattern of Tinna Thorudottir Thorvaldar. They each did a sampler for homework, which they managed very well. They are now ready to begin their Casablanca blankets!
Kirsten van der Riet is not a stranger to handwork but is relatively new to the art of hand embroidery. She took on the huge task of embroidering a tablecloth originally given to her mom-in-law, Selma many years ago. The DMC threads she used were all part of the original pattern too! The result is lovely. It really is a work of art which Kirsten can be very proud of. I’m sure Selma is delighted to see the tablecloth come to life.
And last but not least I have finally finished my son’s jersey. I used the DROPS designs pattern (Ice Island), and British racing car green, Elle Marino wool. I loved working with this wool; we really have the most amazing wool here in South African. It is a dream to knit with. The design was somewhat of a challenge, but then again, I am always game for a challenge! I am pleased with the result. I just hope Luke likes his jersey too!
I give lessons in knitting, crocheting and hand embroidery at Kyalami are on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. Lessons run every alternate week, except for the Thursday mornings; they are every week. I’d love you to join me so I can share my passion for crafts with you!
