Greetings fellow crafters!
The year is fully under way and Joburg is HOT! We desperately need more rain. But, the days are beautiful and sunny and the gardens are stunning with all the colourful flowers, birds and butterflies. Life is good.
I have embroidered another four the quilt designs of Colleen Goy’s (loosely based on William Morris patterns). So all sixteen of the panels are done! Norah Doherty has agreed to sew up the panels and then I need to get them professionally quilted. The next step for me though, is to choose the material for the sashings. How exciting!
Now to share with you what some of my students have been doing: Bohlale Letlhaka, an 11 year old, started crochet lessons a couple of months ago came back from the December holidays with a huge granny square that she had done all by herself. I was so impressed!
Mary Koperer embroiders magnificently. She worked on a gorgeous picture of a bride and groom teddy bears couple. It is very cute and Mary’s stitching is of the highest standard.
From a personal point of view, I am working on two things. I bought a Shashiko kit in New Zealand last year. Shashiko is Japanese embroidery involving runner stitch. I have just begun working on the small square flannel that I purchased. I hope I can do this art form justice. I certainly have watched enough You-Tube clips for guidance.
I also bought a stash of Elle cotton last Tuesday with the intension of re-covering all the cushions in my lounge. The plan is to do each one using different crochet mosaic pattern-all Tinna Thorvaldar’s designs. I am already halfway through the Block Party cushion cover and loving it! If you haven’t learned to do mosaic crochet, come and let me teach you. It is wonderfully creative.
I give lessons at Ribbonsfields in Bordeaux every Thursday morning, so if Kyalami Estates are too far for you, please consider this option. Lessons at Kyalami are on Wednesday and Friday mornings and Tuesday afternoons every alternate week. I’d love you to join me so I can share my passion for crafts with you!
