Greetings fellow hand crafters!
Wow! Joburg has been so cold and it’s already October!! Global warming is doing crazy things with our weather. I am hoping Spring will eventually happen.
I have embroidered another one the quilt designs of Colleen Goy’s (loosely based on William Morris patterns). Of the twenty-five I need to do for the quilt, nine are now complete. I have also completed a candle wicking project which is a wedding present, so I have not been sitting idle.
Now to share with you what some of my students have been doing: Both Shira Bacher and Aziza Abba decided to do a Mountmellick designs from Yvette Stanton and Prue Scott’s book. Shira chose to make hers into a for a cushion for one of the rooms of her home and Aziza made hers into a table runner. Both did their embroideries in the classic white thread on white linen, and they look magnificent. Aziza completed a second project; also is a runner, but this was a Jacobean design. It is stunning, a real work of art.
Judy Benjamin embroidered a set of three cushions with a grass theme as a Christmas gift for her daughter-in-law. They are absolutley stunning.
All the cushions and runners have been sewn up beautifully by seamstress Delene Wolfe-Coote.
A few months ago, my young student, Nara Mahale asked me to teach her how to do Tunisian crocheting. I’ve been showing her a few of the basic stitches and she arrived at her last lesson with a headband crocheted in the Tunisian knit stitch. What a joy it is to have such an enthusiastic student!
During the last school holidays two teenage girls came for lessons to make bracelets. They were absolute beginners, and the bracelets were done in needlepoint, but I think the girls had fun learning the new skill and having something to show for their efforts!
I give lessons at Ribbonsfields in Bordeaux EVERY Thursday morning, so if Kyalami Estates are too far for you, please consider this option. Lessons at Kyalami are on Wednesday and Friday mornings and Tuesday afternoons every alternate week. I’d love you to join me so I can share my passion for crafts with you!
