Greetings fellow hand crafters
I have just returned home from an incredible holiday in New Zealand. I did manage to buy some lovely wool there, but what amazed me was how expensive the yarn was and how few haberdasheries I could find. Still, I did find a treasure chest and had a ball in there. I bought a Japanese Sashiko project too, which I will share with you in due course.
But, in this blog, it gives me great pleasure to showcase my students’ projects. I am immensely proud of each of them.
Kayla Jackson has been for a couple of crochet lessons, and she has produced near-perfect granny squares. Having not crocheted before, this is an incredible feat for a young girl still at junior school. I am encouraged that youngsters are keen to learn this art-form. It gives me huge hope!
Zahra Wadee finished her first Jacobean embroidery. Her stitching is excellent and it looks magnificent the way she has edged it in a lace work too.
Elsie Pearson has been working on a cashmere woollen blanket for her grandson. It is absolutely gorgeous with little lambs playing all over it. What a work of art and heirloom for her family.
The story of Conor Hughes is also interesting. She has picked up and completed a Rowandean embroidery that she begun years ago, but this journey has also led to her getting her eyesight improved. What a win! The frame of her embroidery also includes embroidery to give the picture a three-dimensional look. What a stunning masterpiece this has turned out to be. It is beautiful.
Fleur Devine crocheted her grandson a bag to put his Easter eggs into. It is too precious for words. Needless to say, her grandson loves the bag. It is a true keepsake. What a hit!
As charity drives for Threads of Joy this year, I have chosen two options. The one is the One ball One Scarf campaign for Mandela Day; the other is the Knitted Knockers (alternatives to breast prosthesis). I challenge myself and students to give back to society and in South Africa there is need all around us. Let me know if you want to be involved in either of these.
Some news, I am giving lessons at Ribbonsfields in Bordeaux EVERY Thursday morning, so if Kyalami Estates are too far for you, please consider this option. Lessons at Kyalami are on Wednesday and Friday mornings and Tuesday afternoons every alternate week. I’d love you to join me so I can share my passion for crafts with you!
