Greetings fellow hand crafters
In Johannesburg we are well and truly into winter. The mornings are freezing and it is rather difficult getting out of bed! But we are blessed with glorious sunny days, so despite the low temperatures, it isn’t gloomy at all.
In South Africa we celebrate Mandela Day on the 18th of July each year. Mandela did not want this to be a public holiday, but rather a day when we served our fellow men with acts of good will and charity for at least 67 minutes. A group of ladies started the “67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day” initiative a few years ago and this year they did a joint venture with Kismet wool shop whereby balls of wool were created and labelled “One ball one scarf”. I challenged my Threads of Joy ladies to knit or crochet scarves for this campaign and I am so proud of their efforts. The scarves are beautiful and will all be handed in at the end of the month. Thank you everyone who has taken part.
To share with you some of the work of my students, Elfie De Necker’s Jacobean design of Hazel Blomkamp is complete. It is ready to be framed and is exquisite. What an absolute work of art. Dalene Smith’s finished the jersey for her granddaughter and it is lovely. Apparently her granddaughter doesn’t want to take it off and I don’t blame her!
Arlene Muller’s Cosmos embroidery from Roseworks, which she did in Perle thread is a masterpiece and is already sewn up into a cushion as a gift to her daughter-in-law. It is such a stunning piece of work. My beginner crochet student, Lynne McCallum, produced a pair of yoga socks within her first 3 months of lessons. I am so impressed with her progress. What a champion!
