Greetings fellow hand crafters
I hope you are keeping warm, and knitting or crocheting to keep busy on these cold evenings; albeit it by battery lamplight rather than electric light due to the ongoing power cuts. My mom always used to say that as the days get longer the cold gets stronger, but it does seem that the days are a little warmer. There are buds on the trees and plants that are ready to sprout as soon as spring arrives next month. I can’t wait! I am so not a winter person.
The cushion with the Janet Davies Mountmellick design I did, is back and I am delighted with how it looks. Beautiful yellow daffodils to entice spring to come. Anita Bouwer has sewn up the cushion so professionally too. If you want to learn to do a bit of Mountmellick embroidery this is an ideal starter project.
Student numbers are steadily increasing. Some are learning to crochet for the first time, or mastering the art of knitting, but many are coming for embroidery lessons. The ladies enjoy sitting together chatting away while they create their own masterpieces. There is a joy that comes from seeing a piece of material come to life with coloured flowers or a ball of wool take form into a blanket or jersey.
I have been commisioned to embroider a cushion for a friend who loves birds. I’ve chosen to do a Crowned Crane from one of Mille Marotta’s adult colouring-in books. I’ve opted to use artistic lisence with the colours rather than the the real-life colours of the bird. It is still in the beginning stages, but I feel it is going to be an exciting piece to work on.
When relaxing in the evenings, I’m crocheting Tinna Thorvaldor’s Queen Cal blanket. I simply can’t put it down. Enough said!
